The European Union might “respond swiftly and decisively” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans imposed by the US against five European individuals involved in fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.
EU Officials Condemn US Move as ‘Intimidation’
Officials from Europe including the French president accused Washington of “bullying and threats”, following the travel bans targeted figures who have been at the heart of campaigns to enact laws regulating American tech companies.
“For far too long, European activists have spearheaded coordinated campaigns to pressure US companies to suppress American viewpoints they disagree with,” wrote the US secretary of state in a social media post. “The current administration will not stand for such actions of censorship beyond its borders.”
Broad Criticism Across Europe
Nations including Germany, Spain, and the UK, alongside numerous EU representatives joined the French president in condemning the move.
The restrictions were enacted on Tuesday on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s digital governance law, along with four activists fighting false information, from two in Germany and two in the UK.
A Deepening Dispute Over Regulation
The DSA is viewed by US officials as a form of censorship, whereas European leaders contend the regulations are essential to control inflammatory language and falsehoods.
