Individuals Coming Off Weight-Loss Jabs Put On Weight Four Times Faster Compared to People Using Diet and Exercise

Obesity treatment often requires long-term strategies.

New research reveals that people who discontinue popular slimming jabs like Mounjaro or Wegovy tend to recover lost weight far faster than those who stop conventional lifestyle plans.

Published data in a leading health publication points out that while overweight people often shed substantial amounts of their total mass while using the jabs, the mass is regained at an average rate of 0.8 kg per month upon discontinuation.

"Individuals buying these medications must be cognizant of the risk of rapid rebound weight gain when the treatment is stopped," stated researcher Dr. Susan Jebb.

Such speed of recovery means a return to pre-treatment mass in about 18 months.

Weighing Approaches

The research, which looked at 37 of studies involving over 9,000 of patients, contrasted the outcomes of the injectable medications with other pills.

The team point out that people who lose weight through lifestyle changes alone usually experience a more gradual creep back—around 0.1 kg a month—after stopping.

Explaining the Quick Regain

Doctors believe the mechanism of the jabs explains the accelerated rebound.

GLP-1 drugs mimic a body's own chemical called glucagon-like peptide-1, which helps regulate appetite.

"Long-term administration of the hormone concentrations far above than the body's typical production could lead to the system to generate a reduced amount of its own natural GLP-1, and could lessen sensitivity to its actions," explained Dr. Adam Collins, a dietetics researcher.

"Discontinuation of this medication leads to appetite is no longer kept in check, making overeating a significant risk."

A Chronic Condition?

Medical guidelines suggest the injections for individuals with weight-linked medical conditions, accompanied by recommended diet and exercise modifications.

A number of clinicians say that, due to the high risk of relapse, the therapy might need to be ongoing.

This view is reinforced by pharmaceutical companies, who note that the findings "highlight the persistent character of obesity," comparing it to managing diseases like high blood pressure.

Patient Experiences

Users who have stopped the jabs explain a sudden resurgence of appetite.

"It felt as if a switch activating and you're instantly ravenous," said a patient.

This difficulty is exacerbated if users have not developed sustainable dietary or behavioural modifications during therapy.

Significant Adoption

Survey data indicate that millions of people in the UK have tried these injections in the last 12 months, with desire continuing to grow.

  • Adoption is more common among women compared to men.
  • The 40s and 50s demographic shows the highest level of interest.
  • A large proportion access the drugs through private prescriptions rather than public health services.

Ultimately, experts caution that while GLP-1 drugs are effective tools for shedding pounds, they are not a standalone cure and maintained weight loss hinges on ongoing lifestyle support.
